As I was walking to my front door, I noticed something strange. My Nest Doorbell Not Working After Power Outage .
It usually lights up when someone presses the button, and it chimes inside so that I know there’s someone at the door. But this time, nothing happened when I pressed the button.
I realized that a power outage had occurred earlier in the day and wondered if this could be related to why my Nest Doorbell wasn’t working.
So, I looked at what might be wrong and see if I could fix it myself; after many struggles, I got it fixed.
In this article, I’ll walk you through the steps you can take to fix your Nest doorbell that isn’t turning on after a power outage.
Let’s get started!
Nest Doorbell Not Working After Power Outage
These are a few possible solutions that you should try when the Nest doorbell isn’t working after a power outage.
1. Charge With a USB Cable
After a long period of a power outage, your Nest doorbell battery can be turned low and needs to be recharged completely.
However, the battery does not charge properly with the hardwiring. You must plug it into the power source using the USB cable.
So, you should remove the doorbell from the mounting plate and then disconnect hardwiring (turn the breaker off before removing the doorbell).
Once you have removed your Nest doorbell, plug it inside your house into the power outlet using the USB cable that comes with your doorbell.
And let the doorbell be fully charged, which can take about 1 to 2 hours. After the doorbell is fully charged, it will be turned on, and you can use it.
2. Power Cycle
Power cycling is another possible way to resolve this problem, as it will refresh the doorbell and remove any software glitches.
You can power cycle your Nest doorbell by turning it off and then on its power. You can follow the below steps to power cycle the doorbell:
1. Locate the circuit breaker which provides power to your Nest doorbell.
2. Flip the breaker to the off position and wait about a minute.
3. Then turn the breaker on, and check if the doorbell turns back on.
3. Overheated Doorbell
In a few cases, overheating issues with the doorbell prevent it from turning on. The issue can be due to extreme weather conditions or a power outage.
Nest doorbells stop connecting to the network or turning on while it is overheated to prevent any hardware damage.
So, you should remove the doorbell from the wall plate and take it inside your house. Keep it at a cool temperature until the temperature moderates.
4. Check Power Supply
Check your doorbell power supply and wires connected to ensure that it is connected securely to the power source.
And also, check if the power cable or the outlet you are using isn’t faulty. If so, you should replace the power cord and use another power outlet.
Also, you should check the doorbell wiring using a multimeter to ensure it receives enough power to work.
The power requirements for your Nest doorbell are 12 to 24 V AC globally and 16 to 24 V AC for only North America.
5. Reset the Doorbell
While your doorbell is unresponsive after a power outage, you should also try performing a factory reset for the device.
Performing a factory reset may help you to turn the doorbell back on and monitor your front door.
Here is how you can reset the Nest doorbell:
1. Remove the doorbell from its mounting plate.
2. Locate the reset button at the back of the device.
3. Press and hold the reset button with a paperclip or other similar tool for about 20 to 25 seconds and check if the doorbell turns on.
6. Replace Battery
Sometimes, if the doorbell is too old or used under extreme weather conditions, its battery will die.
So, you should replace the battery with a new one in order to get your doorbell turned back on or working.
According to Nest, replacing the doorbell battery isn’t easy; you will need proper guidance or help from a technician.
7. Replace the Doorbell
After trying all the above solutions, none of them fixed the doorbell. You should consider replacing your Nest doorbell with a new one.
